Opening of the training program of  bachelors and master's degrees at the chair "Geographic Information System" of the department of infocommunication technologies of ITMO University was initiated in connection with the demand of modern trends of infocommunications’ development, course of scientific researches and demand for business - offers in the high-tech market.

Engineering training at the department is built on the following principle: Bachelor foundation for the profile "Software and secure infocommunications" laid in studying with the general theory of information. A professional deep and thorough understanding of the information sphere, from the position of categories such as matter and time is formed.

After that, we study the hardware and software and technical information tools by which the recording, processing, transmission, storage and display of multimedia arrays, space-time and special information in the infosphere can be done. Emphasis is given to next-generation networks, which provide services in the space-time field.

Only after the getting of special fundamental knowledge of electronics, programming, networks NCN (including Maths, Physics and Chemistry) chair starts the cycle of disciplines for data protection. Such as cryptography, steganography, the theory of information security, protection of information systems design, etc.

In decision theory besides the classical approaches, we study the mathematical methods of reflective analysis, with a description of fraudulent actions in the informational conflict  with countering of subjects and objects in the infosphere, which principles were laid in ancient China.

Students receive training in methods and ways of psychological countering made through multimasmedia agents. In special classes, they become familiar with the hypnosis.

Knowledge and skills for the design and modeling infocommunications are incepted both on the basis of domestic requirements of technical standards and оn the requirements of foreign standards. The chair uses laboratory equipment Xilin, Autodesk, Cisco, Oracle, Intergraph and others.

Infocommunication technologies are technologies of enterprises which manufacturing resources are distributed in space. It’s impossible to centrally manage such companies, engaged in its development, design and modeling at the modern technical level without the use of geoinformation systems. Really functioning geoinformation controlling  models of the enterprises provide a different level their  administration and development. This also applies to all transport companies, energy complexes and other businesses serving different engineering communications.

On the other hand, the opposite effect is worth noting. GIS have received infocommunication component and made an explosion in the Internet with projects such as Google map, yhoo, yandex maps and so on. In one word the modern business is not possible without the GIS- analysis. At the chair a new scientific concept of "geo information communications" was born. For this reason, education at the chair is dedicated to the master of geoinformation systems and associated technologies. Besides, students study a certain standard of discipline "Geoinformatics" on the basis of product USA Geomedio of company Intergraph, «Photogrammetry", "geodetic support." New disciplines are "Geoinformation system of territorial administration," "Geographic information technology three-dimensional modeling," "Geographic information modeling technology communications networks." In the educational discipline "Remote Sensing"at practical classes use different flying robots that are designed and created together with the basic enterprises. As an on-board equipment for drones are installed optical, thermal and radar systems of different high-resolution range, depending on the task.

In the preparing of the masters basic enterprise GIS Department of ITMO University pays special attention to the following aspects of GIS:

  1. The histiory of the question :
    • Genereral information about the figure of the Earth
    • Ellipsoids of rotation (what and why)
    • The counting system of heights (which)
    • Cartography -> electronic cartography
    • The emergence of GIS (when, what)
  2. Practical usage of GIS:
    • GIS for Engineers
    • GIS for analysis of geospatial data
    • Engineering (industrial) GIS
    • GIS for general use

There is a preparing of the teaching staff, both Russian and foreign graduate students  at the GIS chair. They actively participate in various conferences.
